New Tallest Approved In Cardiff

Plans by Custard Architecture to design Wales' tallest building have been given the go-ahead by Cardiff City Council following a full planning application for the scheme.

The development, dubbed Bayscape, is a 119 metre tall, 30-storey tower and several lower-rise blocks of up to 8-storeys.The scheme is split thus the lower rise blocks contain the residential units whilst the tower itself will be a 130 room hotel, complete with a public restaurant on the 23rd floor of the building. The operator of the whole is reportedly under negotiation.

With the lower-rise blocks and their 110 apartments aimed largely at the upper end of the private residential market, it means the developer will be able to construct the scheme in stages one building at a time along with the necessary infrastructure improvements to the area including a new footbridge.

The site of the project is situated along Victoria Wharf next to the River Ely's canoe slalom making it the perfect venue for aspiring canoeists if it ever gets built.

Tower plans come and go in Cardiff though, a place that has a particularly poor record in ever getting projects realised. Those that have failed to be built in the last property cycle include the Sports Village, and Urban Solutions Glass Needle which went through years of will-it won't-it. This part of the city has however seen significant regeneration and with hundreds of newly constructed apartments nearby there's no reason to think it won't continue to in the future.

The developer of Bayscape is the Cardiff Marine Group who also own the marina that the potential tower overlooks giving something of an indication they might actually have a long-term
