The long expected planning application has gone in for a series of new towers at 3 Millharbour and 6-8 South Quay Square in London's Docklands.

Featuring nine buildings in total, first part of the application relates to the four proposed buildings on what's dubbed the Millharbour Quarter have been designed by Foster + Partners with input from Skidmore, Owings and Merrill into the masterplan that corresponds with the overall vision for the area that was dreamed up by Terry Farrell and Partners.

The star of the first part of the scheme, Millharbour West, is Building A, a 46 storey tower to stand on a corner plot bounded by Mastmaker Road and Millharbour and has its footprint lay diagonally across its portion of the plot.

Aimed at the private residential market with 455 apartments, the height of this largely glazed building to the tip of the lift equipment on the roof will be 150.50 metres in height pushing it into skyscraper classification by a mere 50 centimetres. It will be clad in the latest glass for the best reduction of solar gain possible with some aluminium panels giving it a look of neutral grey.

Sharing the two levels of basement parking is a 108 metre tall office tower that rises to the shoulder of the taller Pan Peninsula Tower, Building D, that overlooks Marsh Wall and Millharbour and that hints at being an international style glass block that floats above a a near transparent triple height ground floor.

Breaking away from the traditional International style rectangle is the narrowing floorplate that corresponds with the angle of the boundary of the site with a seemingly jagged edge that riffs off the "teeth" of the Willis Building. It is here the vast majority of the 44,938 square metres of office space will be located.

As part of the 1,634 new apartments on offer, several buildings for affordable housing are also included in the development running to approximately 82 metres and 50 metres respectively in height.

On the other section of the scheme is Millharbour East where a further concentration of buildings are planned including another residential skyscraper to stand south of Pan Peninsula, Building E.

This one is designed by SOM and overlooks the dock to its east. Consisting of three vertical slabs that step up in height towards the north with a copper coloured façade detailing separating the north and south slabs from the centre one.

Colouring is further used by the architect in a series of seemingly randomised vertical strips that run up the central slab with recessed balconies in between. The north and south faces of the building also have recessed balconies but on these sides of the building the façade treatment is similar to the glazing creating continuity rather than difference.

In all, the scheme marks a huge densification on the previous plans which have gradually increased in scope and ambition since the Millennium Quarter first surfaced.
